Romance, Red Bull and Paperclips

The three elements are on my desk right now:

A brand new manuscript that's going to my lovely editor this week; an empty can of the jet-fuel-tasting orange stuff; and all kinds of brightly colored paperclips in a paper origami receptacle that my eight-year old son made.

There's Trent Reznor snarling in the background that we shouldn't bite the "hand that feeds", my 95-pound Lab curled on my feet as he snores and dream-twitches. I've just finished my latest novel, Gladius, another addition to the Hussies series (well, if it's accepted that is...I'll share the news as soon as I have them). The UEFA Euro Cup (soccer) is on...which means my TV screen full of yummy men in shorts.

It's a good life, I tell you.

Which reminds me of the first romance I've read. Remember that one? Aside from the Harlequins that I was unfortunate enough to try back in the 80s (and made me run and never look back), I clearly remember my first ever romance. Actually, it was an erotic romance entitled Ravenous, by Sherri L. King. After I finished, I thought, DAMN, guns AND hot love AND a strong heroine?! Gimme more. I went on to try another, because O Joy, my hopes were up and my woman parts were tingly. I read Madame Charlie by Sahara Kelly. That was in 2006, I think. Supreme Delight, I LOVED it too. Two good books in two tries? I was hooked. So from one of those who'd look at romance books with a bit of distrust and a whole lot of "mehh", I became a fan of what I call "hybrids". I'm not sure if it's a proper term. Don't care. Hey, I even call science fiction "scifi" which I know gets some people's panties all bunched into a knot. You what? I don't care about that either. But back to those books with enough action to satisfy the gamer in me that also happen to pack some hot love and sex that please me as a woman? Well damn, can I ask for more?

I've read more of these hybrids since then, and even caught myself once or twice reading scifi or fantasy stories and *adding* the romance and sex in my head because suddenly, I thought it was lacking, which had never happened before. But I realize I'm a late bloomer.

So Hussies out there, do you remember the first romance or erotic romance book you read? What was it (and don't forget linkage goodness so we can drool at the cover)?

P.S. that photo was taken when we spent a weekend in Paris last year. It always makes me laugh because as my husband took it, I said "Wait! I have something in my eye!" To which he replied "What? An Eiffel tower?"

TO KISS A GARGOYLE EXCERPT

Her forefinger brushed a sharp jagged edge. The column base. She reached higher, but couldn’t stretch enough to touch him. She’d misjudged the distance and needed to shift onto one hip to roll her body past the opening and onto the ledge with him. Slowly, she lifted her gaze to the gargoyle.

She kneeled beside him on the concrete ledge, surveying the inset and ledge’s short expanse. She had done it! Her pantyhose snagged and ripped from the rough concrete. NAKED LUST. I have been writing these short stories since the beginning. I figure sometimes a reader wants a quick little laugh or tease between running around the house, kids, late night reading or work. Something to make them smile and squirm. That’s what the LUST series is. Something to take your mind away and give it a little ride.

The newest one is a little different than the older ones because the stories are a bit longer. The centerpiece is about a woman with multiple partners. But as usual I have some outrageous sex in some stories, some to make you scratch your head and say, “huh?” and even one that makes you think “I know he didn’t just say that.”
The LUST books are basically me. A little off center but wanting to be fun and playful.

Q: Rowan, could you tell us a bit about your latest release?

A: ROLL PLAY is the first book I have ever had published and I am thrilled to be part of the Ellora's Cave family. EC was my first choice from the moment I started reading erotic romance e-book.

The book is a contemporary with a strong paranormal element in the form of an enchanted 10-sided die (like the kind used to play dungeons and dragons). Amara and Griffin met each other as teens playing role-playing games, but nothing came of their feelings then. Now Griffin has found a way to bring Amara back into his life. By day she is working on a screen play for his company. By night, she rolls the die and awakens in a magical realm where Griffin makes all of her erotic fantasies come true. Getting to know the man and the lover makes Amara certain she wants Griffin to be a permanent part of her life, but first she has to be certain that their time together isnt just a game forhim

Q: And honey, you did a fantastic job of creating characters who set the pages on fire. Can you tell us a little about your current WIP's?

A: I am currently working on a short erotic contemporary romance about a woman who's greatest fear in her relationships is being too deeply known, too deeply seen. She likes to keep people at a distance. Of course, the man she loves and who has come back into her life is a painter, someone who sees all of her.

I am also working on a contemporary that I hope to submit to EC's Exotica line called RIGHTS OF THE MASTER about a woman who must once again spend time with the man who was not just her sexual equal, but the man whose dominance matched her submissive soul.

Q: Oh Yumm. I can't wait! How do you come up with your ideas?

A: Just about anything can end up becoming a story idea from an article in a magazine (I keep a file of favorites) to hearing about an interesting job to a passion of mine. I am determined to write a book where chocolate figures prominantly. That will make for some great giveaways for readers, dont you think? One of my current ideas is for two stories about twins born on different days (one born just before midnight, one just after) and their names are Eve and Dawn. What enables me to follow through with an idea is the characters. If I have discovered compelling characters, I stay with the story to see how it turns out for them

Q: How do you balance family and writing?

A: This is an important part of my life. I know it is a challenge for a lot of writers - heck, for women in general - and it is something I have worked hard at. For almost six years I have been an at-home-mom (I was never good at the 9-5 world), and I have two sons who will be 8 and 5 in December. My younger son just started half-day preschool so for the first time in nearly five years I have time without kids during the week. It's only two hours, but right now that seems like a lot. I try to get as much done as I can in this time.

Most of my day, however, still involves them. By the time they are in bed, I am too tired to write so I have learned to blend writing and parenting. If I write in the dining room, they take out their "work" and create along side me. More recently I have found that I can ask for short blocks of time (an hour to an hour and a half) to work in my office (it's the garage, but it's all mine!) where they watch a movie and I write.

Since the publication of ROLL PLAY they understand better that Mommy's writing is a real thing and that she needs time for that just like Daddy needs his time at his office. One thing that works is when I ask for time to write, I write. And when I go back to my family, I am fully with them. Oh the occasional bribe works, too. I was on a deadline for a book for The Lotus Circle and I told them that if they gave me the time I requested then when the deadline was up they would each get a new Webkinz. It work. I made the deadline and there are happy kids with new stuffed animals in our house.

I was curious about the mind behind this and other great books and Claire was nice enough to spend some time with me.

Claire, tell me about yourself. How did you get started writing?

I started writing erotica and erotic romance back in 1996 as a way to explore my own sexual fantasies in a safe, secret way. At the time I wasn’t yet comfortable with my submissive, masochistic sexual orientation. When I dared to share my writing with a few close friends, they encouraged me to try and get my work published. Writing led to actual exploration in real life and boy, what a long, strange FUN road it’s been! Lately I’ve been writing male/male erotic romance and having a great time entering the minds and hearts of strong, sexy men who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable.

Could you tell me about your backlist.

I have published over twenty five novels. What genre do you write? What drew you to write in that genre? If you mix genres talk about that too.

I write BDSM both consensual and nonconsensual. This was my first love, as I find the passion possible in a loving D/s relationship to be combustible. It began as my own secret exploration. As I grew in my own life, experiencing the lifestyle I’d only dreamed of, that experience colored and enriched my work. I began to branch out with some science fiction (Pleasure Planet:Eros), vampire tales (True Kin Series) as well as a historical novel (Seduction of Colette) and my witch tale (Cast a Lover’s Spell). My latest passion is male/male erotic romance. I’ve written six male/male romances, three with a BDSM theme and three vanilla but sizzling hot. My latest venture is a ménage a tois between two bisexual men and a woman who signs up to be their submissive sex slave (Two Masters for Alex, coming out in Jan, 2008 with Elloras Cave). Do you like hearing from readers?

There is nothing, I repeat, NOTHING, more thrilling than getting an email from a reader! A writer creates a story in a vacuum. The editor is a good first barometer, but it isn’t until someone actually writes and lets me know what they thought that I can breathe easier. I also love to read reviews. I still can hardly believe people actually buy and read my stuff, much less take the time to write a considered review of my work. It’s the ultimate compliment and most certainly not one I take for granted. I don’t have any contests on my site at the moment, but I often post excerpts during chats and do giveaways at that time.

What are your plans for the future?

My dream is to write fulltime. Right now, with three children at home to support and a husband who is partially disabled and only works part time, I can’t quit my day job! But someday I hope to devote myself exclusively to my passion.

Have you ever started a book and then have it completely turn around and change course? Tell us about it.

That has happened a couple of times! For example, Island of Temptation began as a novel about a spoiled young woman, a driven professional guy and a bisexual laid-back artist who are stranded together on a tropical island. Instead it evolved into a story about a gay super sexy laid-back artist and a straight guy. As they struggle just to survive they develop the kind of close relationship men in combat develop. Their friendship evolves into something much more intense.

Any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?

Follow your heart and your passion. Don’t write for a particular genre or “craze”. Write what moves you—what matters to you. Before you submit anything, proofread the hell out of it! Print it out because it’s easier to catch errors on the page than on the screen. Once you complete the manuscript, let it sit a few weeks and “gel”. Come back to it with a fresh eye. Read the dialog aloud to see if it rings true. Stilted dialog throws a reader out of the story. Don’t get discouraged with rejections!! (Boy is THAT easy to say but not to do!). Remember, J K Rowling was refused by a number of publishers before her Harry Potter series found a home!

What is the hardest part of writing?

For me the hardest part is getting a good plot going with a hook that will capture the reader’s interest. The first few chapters are always the toughest for me. Then I get into a groove and just take off.

What was the release date of your first book? Why did you write it, who published it and can you tell us about receiving the “call”?

My very first book came out in 1996. It was entitled Sarah’s Surrender and it was released in print as a paperback with Masquerade Books (now defunct). I had wanted to call it Sarah’s Awakening, and when the rights reverted back to me, I changed the title accordingly. It was one of those flukes of good luck and timing that I managed to publish the first novel I ever wrote, and was offered a contract before I’d written more than three chapters! I wasn’t really serious about it back then, so maybe that’s why it worked out (beginner’s luck). Plus the market was much smaller and the necessity of an agent much less acute back then. Whatever the reason, I sent the first three chapters of a book about a young woman’s sexual awakening, specifically her fascination with D/s (Dominance/submission) to the publisher of Masquerade and a few weeks later I got a phone call from him. He said, “Okay, we got the first three chapters of your book. Where’s the rest?” It was the most thrilling phone call! He bought the book right there on the phone. I never made much money on it with them (having no agent to negotiate for me, I suppose) but it was my first advance and my first novel and from then on I had the bug!

Sally: When did you start writing?
Dorothy: When haven't I been writing? Well, I suppose I didn't get much done while in college. I was much too busy with...um...other things than to work on my fiction. But some of my earliest (and best) memories involve making up stories in my head. As soon as I learned to write, I started put these stories down into little picture books for myself and my family. That's not to say those first stories were any good. Yet creating them gave me great pleasure. I remember one about monsters and another about talking cows and I'm sure there were several spy stories in the mix as well.

In 2001, I decided it was time to follow my dream of writing professionally. So, I developed a very detailed (and strict) budget and quit my job. Almost the next day, I discovered that if I was going to be a successful writer, I needed to actually learn the craft of writing. And that's the day when I really began writing.

Sally: Okay, so who encouraged you to write or influenced you the most?
Dorothoy: I'm lucky to have a family who encouraged me and a husband who believes in me. But there is one person--a teacher--who provided me with a great gift. She was my third grade teacher. Though I can't remember her name, I remember very well the day she picked the poem I'd written to be published in the school newsletter. And I also clearly remember the words she wrote on the top of my copy of that newsletter: "Keep writing. You're going to do something great with your words one day." It's amazing how such a small piece of kindness can stick with you for a lifetime. Her words of encouragement helped fuel my desire to become the writer I am today.

Sally: What inspired you to write Lady Iona's Rebellion?
Dorothy: I know several writers who claim their characters are like friends to them. I suppose that is true for me, too, which should probably make me worry about how I treat my real-life-flesh-and-blood friends. I mean, my characters never get a moment's peace. I put them through hell and if they manage to survive that, I drop a bomb on their heads. It's a miracle that when I meet a real-life friend on the street, she doesn't let out a scream and take off running in the opposite direction.

But even though I wish horrible things for my characters, I do love them. Especially Lady Iona. She showed up as a minor character in my debut Regency: The Marriage List (which is contracted to be reissued by Cerridwen Press). There was something special about her. She had a knack for finding trouble, and I knew as I was writing The Marriage List that Iona simply had to have her own book! She was so good at getting herself into trouble--and had so much fun doing it--that Lady Iona's Rebellion practically wrote itself.

Heck, I liked her so much, when my husband and I got a new Papillon puppy this past February I named the rambunctious scamp Lady Iona!

Sally: What do you enjoy the most about writing?

Dorothy: What don't I enjoy? Well, rejection letters. But that has nothing to do with the writing-side of writing, now does it? Writing romance is a dream job for me. It's similar to playing house with dolls. I get to make up elaborate stories for my characters and put them in wondrous places. And I'm in control...most of the time. What can be better than that?
Sally: What is your naughty secret?Dorothy: Oh my goodness. I'm terribly boring, I'm afraid. All this spending too much time in your own head can do that to a person. I bet the naughtiest secret I could tell you is that I love to read erotica. The hotter the better!

Sally: Why Regency period? What captures your imagination about this period in history?

Dorothy: That's a great question. What is a wildlife biologist by training and an environmental urban planner by profession doing writing about the Regency period? You're supposed to write what you know. And let me tell you, when I set out on this path, I knew nothing about the Regency period. All I knew was that reading Regency romances sparked my imagination. They are very much like the fairytales we grew up with as children. And I ask you, who can resist a rakish lord dressed in tight pants?

But that wasn't the only thing that made me chose During the Regency period. There was the glitter and the romance of that short period in English history. It was a time when the public followed the lives of the aristocracy just like we follow celebrities today. Crowds would gather to watch the lords and ladies dressed in their finest suits and gowns emerge from their carriages to attend balls. Gossip columns in the daily newspapers spilled the dirt on the latest scandals. But beneath the glitter and the excess--just like today--some very real, very compelling dramas were playing out. Although historical romances whisk us away to another place and another world, I believe the struggle to be loved and make our relationships work despite the odds against us is something we all understand.

So, instead of writing what I knew, I set out to writing what I loved to read. Not that it was an easy path to take. When working on a historical, I spend hours a day at the library researching the period and location . Some of my best resources are fictional works that were published during the Regency. Luckily, I enjoy the research almost as much as the writing.

Sally: Welcome to the Hussies Book Slam, Kira. (Kira ducks.) Whoa, easy there. (Looking around the library.) Relax. You've been in that virtual reality too long. This is a real room. I yanked you out of the virutal world. That's right, have a seat by the window. Comfy? Good. Now tell me, Kira, what led you to writing and this particular genre?
Kira: The first book I ever wrote is still on my WIP shelf, but there was something so... compelling... about the idea that I just had to put it on paper. Like a song you can't get out of your head. I suppose I was more stubborn than many, because it took me months to get the hint. But once I started, I couldn't stop. With luck, I never will. *g* As to the genre, I don't really have a choice. I've drawn lines in the creative sand, and my muses generally laugh and shove me over them. So, I just roll with what inspires me, regardless of genre.

Sally: Speaking of rolling around, this book has a lot of orgasmic pleasures happening. Quite a bit of action. Ahem... aside from the obvious, what did you enjoy the most about writing this book?
Kira: The menage scenes in the castle, particularly the shower scene. The characters were a lot of fun to write.

Sally: Okay, see, that was what I thought. (VBG). So now I have to ask, did any real person(s) inspire any of your characters?
Kira: No, generally I get inspired by snippets of conversation, but not people as a whole.

Sally: Ahha... I now see how this idea began to unfolded. Kira is sitting by the water fountain in the mall, eavesdropping on two men and a woman discussing last night, all the while never suspecting Kira isn't really playing a video game on her Blackberry. You're shaking your head. No? Very well, let me ask something elese. What's in store for your readers?
Kira: Many new places, and people, to meet. *g* This book was originally much different. Turns out there were two plots hiding in one story and I had to split them. So, the other half has now been accepted by EC. Readers will see another side of the complex that houses the Zodiac machine. *g* And, if my muses will cooperate, Liam should have a story of his own someday soon.

Sally: Now that sounds like a lot of fun! And speaking of fun, what is your naughty secret?
Kira: I find earlobes to be VERY sexy. *blushes*

Sally: I see.. hmm...Sounds like fodder for another book.

A couple of months later, she received the call from Carole Genz her soon to be editor at Ellora's Cave, who offered her a publishing contract.

Currently, Ms. Brown is working on several other erotic stories, including a sequel to Charmed. When not writing, this Florida native likes spending time with family and friends, riding her Yamaha 650 Classic, surfing the internet, or traveling to exotic locales.

I caught up with this talented new author and like the good Hussy I am convinced her to answer some questions.

Sally: First off, is the rope too tight? Koko? (she shakes her head). Okay then, I'm going to remove the gag. Just answer my questions and I'll untie you and you'll be free to go. (Koko nods her head and agrees.) When did you start writing?

KoKo: I started writing at the age of nine, when I began my own newspaper, but I was put out of business by my grade school principal because it competed with the school newspaper.

Sally: That is so funny, although I'm sure as a child it was pretty upsetting. But glad to see you continued forward with your writing career. Who would you say influenced you the most?
Koko: My main writing influences are Toni Morrison and Johanna Lindsey.

Sally: What do you enjoy the most about writing?

Koko: They are great escapes for me. They allow me to go places and see things I normally would not do in my regular life.

Sally: What is KoKo's naughty secret?
Koko: My naughty secret is that I like to read the personal ads on Craig's List.

Sally: Now that's not naughty. Surely you have something more juicy for our readers. Hmm... Koko? Why are you pursing your lips together? Now, you're shaking your head. I see, going back to read the first line in your blurb... Very well, what is in store for your readers?

Koko: (After breathing a sigh of relief. she agreed to continue in our interview) I am currently writing a sequel to Charmed. The story will focus on Yasmine Patel and her former slave Leopold, whom she was given to at the end of Charmed as part of her punishment for her crimes.

So just who is this new talented writer? Well, she may be new to EC, but Eva St. Croix is the alter-ego of a popular romance writer. She lives in a tropical paradise where she spends her days lying by the pool drinking mint juleps while being fanned and fed grapes by adoring and gorgeous alpha males. If she were one of the characters in her book this would be so true. As it turns out she does live in a tropical paradise but instead of lying by the pool she's in it, the mint julep is bottled water, and the grapes are being thrown at her by adoring family members. Eva loves to put her characters in impossible situations while setting them emotionally on fire so they'll burn for each other with the slightest touch. You'll quite often find Eva with a book in her hand, an ebook on her reader, or a magazine shoved in her oversized purse. She loves to read but more than that she likes to watch people going about their daily activities or having conversations (she's been known to listen in a time or two) for plot ideas. People watching can reveal so much if you only take the time to notice the details.

Crafting a story is a natural ability to Eva. You'll often find her hatching out a plot on her laptop where the good guys have to come together to defeat impossible situations. The coming together is the very best part--hot, wild and wicked--so much so you'll be looking for a fan and mint julep of your own just to cool down.

I caught up with EVA the other day in her whirlwind life and asked her a few questions I know you are all wanting to ask her.

Sally: So Eva can you tell us why you decided to start writing erotic romance?

EVA: I’ve always been an avid reader and writer. I wanted to branch off and diversify my work into erotic romance so that I could explore the closest relationship between a man and woman in a more intimate way.

Sally: You can't get any more intimate with a loving relationship than erotic romance. I definitely agree, fanning myself. Why this story? Where did you get the idea to write RORY'S REGRET?

EVA: I wanted to write a story for Halloween that showed how love lasts past death.

Sally: And you certainly did that with RORY'S REGRET! Ah.. can we ask... Oh yeah, a Hussy can always ask who influenced you the most?

EVA: Dear hubbie. ;-)

Sally: Okay, I should have seen I was walking right into that one.(g) Now it's payback time. What is Eva’s naughty secret?

EVA: Now if I tell it won’t be a secret anymore will it?

Sally: Don't think this Hussy is going to give up and accept an answer like that. There is blackmail you know...

EVA: Okay. Okay. Whispering.

Sally: Oh dear! I can't put that on a pubic forum... On to the next question. (Clearing throat) Everyone has special foods and places they enjoy for romantic interludes. Tell us yours.

EVA: Honey and a moonlit forest.

Sally:Oh yeah, I'm getting a visual here. Before we end the interview, Eva, what do you want readers to know about your writing?

EVA: That it comes from the heart.

Sally: And, what do you want them to take away from reading your books?

EVA: I want them to think about my characters long after they’ve put the book down. If I can accomplish that then I’ve done service to my readers.

Sally: What can readers expect from you in the future?

EVA: My next erotic romance will be Phillip and Valerie’s story, the secondary couple in Rory’s Regret.
